YAAPI

Lisa stated the second year of YAAPI grant was completed on September 30, 2006.  She anticipates the third year funding should start January 1, 2007.  HCCADC will probably be notified December 31, 2007.  She announced the coalition will push forward with initiatives.  Lisa informed the coalition that Tara Oliver has resigned as the Youth Coordinator Chill Smart. Tresa and Sandra will facilitate the meetings until someone is hired. Currently the coalition is actively looking for a coordinator to run the meetings, be onsite for activities, fill commitments, solicit donations and work well with youth.  Interested parties can contact Lisa Hammond.  Tresa stated the adults participating in Chill Smart have planned a breakfast meeting for Saturday 10/28/06 to do some strategic planning for Chill Smart. Anyone interested in joining the adults can contact Tresa for her address.

Atlas &Athena

Lisa announced she met the overseer of the Atlas & Athena program at the prevention conference.  The coordinator of the Hanley Center informed Lisa that all 16 nationwide slots were filled at the time.  The 16 slots become available by the $1million from Sports Illustrated.  It is the 1st program to receive the Sports Illustrated Championship. Upon follow up, Lisa learned that one opening became available.  Lisa explained the details of the program and distributed a handout with program highlights.   Lisa stated it would be an excellent program for a Hernando County High Schools.  The Hernando County School board voted to evaluate the program.  At this time Lisa described needing help to propose the program to a high school, before loosing the opportunity to fill the slot. The Coordinator from the Hanley Center is unable to wait too long before choosing another area in Florida. Florida is assigned 4 of the 16 nation-wide slots.  Lisa suggested Nature Coast Technical High School.  Deputy Ruiz stated his principal knows about the program and he agreed to re-present it to the principal.  Lisa will email her contact information to Deputy Ruiz to forward to administrator.

Art Contest

Sandra reported that the art contest is well on it’s way.  To date, there are 9 schools confirmed to participate.  The contest closes on November 6, 2006.  Judging will take place between 11/10-11/13.  Sandra asked if a place was decided upon to store the art pieces.  Beth offered an office at the harbor.  It was agreed to store them there.  Sandra stated that depending on how many pieces needed to be picked up, she may need volunteers to help.  Sandra announced the names of the judges and reviewed the prizes for top winners.  Tresa agreed to contact Mary Alice to inquire whether there will be a formal presentation at the end of the contest.

 Hernando High Pep Rally

Tresa reported she and Cathy Ann (Cenaps) presented a display, which included the Fatal Vision Night Goggles at the Hernando High Pep Rally on Tuesday 10/24/06.  She stated arrangements were made by a student who requested the Coalition’s presence.  Once there, the guidance counselor was welcoming and enthusiastic to learn about HCCADC and Chill Smart.  The youth enjoyed the display.  Tresa reported feeling unsettled by the fact that many of the students stated they were unaware of the consequences of a DUI and the dangers of binge drinking and its impairments or what to do if they are unable to drive home due to intoxication. Tresa imparted as much information as she could.  She proposed it is a good idea to attempt to have a similar presentation at every high school before homecoming or prom.

Youth Speak Out

Lisa reminded the coalition it was awarded funding to host listening sessions with youth to obtain information to corroborate FYSAS.  Fifteen pre and post sessions will take place.  She requested the commitment from someone to coordinate the recruitment for the sessions.  It is necessary to recruit 12-16 youth for 1 hour for the baseline. The post sessions will be held in April. Lisa is looking to complete the pre sessions in November.  She proclaimed the best persons to recruit are counselors or SRO’s.  Shari suggested to go through the principal to identify person at their school who is best to recruit the students.  Shari agreed to contact Fox Chapel.  Tresa will contact Hernando High.  Lisa will facilitate the sessions.  Deputy Keeney agreed to approach his administrator to arrange for a meeting with Lisa.  Click HERE to see.

Parent Institute

Lisa and Beth represented HCCADC at the Parent Institute held at Challenger on Tuesday 10/24/06.  Beth declared she passed out lots of Chill Smart information and invited people to the meetings.  Lisa announced she presented a workshop for the parents entitled “Beyond Barbie & Brittany, The importance of Positive Role Models for Girls”.

CADCA

Tresa reported that Lisa was chosen to present at CADCA in February, which leaves an opening for a member to attend.  Deputy Ruiz volunteered to go.  Tresa agreed it would be a great opportunity to attend.  She gave Deputy Ruiz tentative dates in February for CADCA.

2007 HCCADC Meetings

Sandra distributed 2007 calendar of dates for HCCADC meetings as well as Chill Smart.  Upon receipt, an error was noticed on the dates of HCCADC meeting.  Sandra asked members to discard that copy and promised to change and forward a copy of corrected calendar to all. Deputy Ruiz informed coalition that there is no early release for schools in November or December, therefore SRO’s unable to attend.

Grants & Accomplishments

Tresa reported YAAPI grant is over until January 1, 2007.  The coalition will be notified by December 31, 2006. The FSU mini-grant covers the listening sessions, CADCA and another Youth Summit.  The Youth Summit will take place early next year.  SPF-SIG will include funding for television commercials.  Currently the coalition is still awaiting the money form SPF-SIG.

Shari motioned to adjourn meeting.  Beth seconded motion.  Meeting adjourned at 4:40 p.m.
