✴Alcohol is the most commonly used drug among Hernando students. 61.2 % students reporting drinking (defined as “more than a few sips”) within their lifetime and 36.1% students reported drinking within the past 30 days. (Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey, 2006)

✴28.8% of high school students reported “binge drinking” which is defined as having 5 or more drinks in one setting within the last 2 weeks. (Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey, 2006)

✴The percentage of Hernando County students involved in a reportable school incident which included alcohol is nearly double that of the state average (SESIR, 2006-2008).

✴An average of 400-425 middle and high school referrals are made each year and 75% of these referrals involve alcohol use. (Hernando County Schools)

✴Data supplied from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Department shows that “between 2000-2006 there was a total of 175 charges related to possession of alcohol by a person under 21 years of age; 150 were charged with Possession of alcohol under 21 years of age and 25 were charged with Driving under the Influence”

In Florida, smoking kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined.

✴Each year in Florida 26,300 kids under 18 become new daily smokers

✴28.8 million packs of cigarettes are bought or smoked by kids each year in Florida

✴Nearly one out of every five adults in Florida smokes

✴Young adults (18 to 24) smoke at higher levels than any other age group

✴15.5% of high school students smoke on a daily basis

✴369,000 kids now under 18 and alive in Florida who will ultimately die prematurely from smoking

✴In 2007, 14.7% high school students and 6.1% among middle school reported they had smoked cigarettes once in the past 30 days.
